THE REBIRTH OF ALGERIAN GENIUS: 800 YEARS OF MATHEMATICAL EXCELLENCE! Centuries ago, the city of Béjaïa in Algeria was the world's center of mathematics! It was there that the renowned Italian mathematician Fibonacci studied and acquired the essentials of his knowledge. It was in Algeria that he mastered the revolutionary use of Arabic numerals (and the crucial concept of Zero!), as well as the methods of algebra and calculus. His major work, Liber Abaci (The Book of Calculation), inspired by the methods he learned in Béjaïa (particularly those concerning the expansion of herds, which led to the famous Fibonacci sequence), introduced this knowledge to Europe, laying the foundations of modern mathematics and commerce. The world has witnessed a story of resilience, genius, and a legacy that defies time. Algeria is reaffirming its place among the world's scientific elite! The triumph of Algerian youth rekindles the ancestral flame of Algerian knowledge, as young Algerian high school graduate, Derrache Chamseddine Abdelali, won the Gold Medal for Algeria at the 65th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Bath, Great Britain, in 2024. In November 2025, four students from the National Higher School of Mathematics (ENSM) in Algeria—Ben Melouka Mohamed Amir, Ait Hamdouch Haitham, Boufedjighen Abdenasser, and Hammadi Abdelilah—won Gold and First Place at the 2025 International Mathematical Olympiad in Moscow, competing against 40 nations! These victories are not a coincidence, but the resurrection of an age-old scientific tradition. These young people are living proof that Algerian ingenuity is eternal. They are the proud bridge between the brilliant past of ancient Algeria and a future where Algerian science and innovation will once again reach their rightful place at the top.
