This video presents a detailed drum transcription and performance of “Moanin’” as interpreted by Jimmy Cobb on pianist Bobby Timmons’s 1960 trio recording. As part of the Jazz Drummer’s Corner series, this episode focuses on listening, it is not a drum cover, but a transcription-based analysis. “Moanin’” is one of the most influential Jazz Standards of the hard bop and soul jazz era. Composed by Bobby Timmons, it was first recorded in 1958 by Art Blakey with Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers for Blue Note. That version helped establish the tune as a defining statement of the gospel-inflected hard bop language. In earlier episodes of this series, I analyzed Blakey’s approach to “Moanin’,” focusing on his shuffle feel. This video continues that line of inquiry by examining how the same composition functions in a different musical setting. 👉 • Moanin' by Art Blakey & the Jazz Messenger... Here, the focus is on the trio version from the album This Here Is Bobby Timmons, recorded in January 1960 and produced by Orrin Keepnews for Riverside Records. The lineup features Bobby Timmons on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Jimmy Cobb’s playing on this session reflects a different aesthetic than Art Blakey’s more driving approach. Cobb’s style is often associated with balance, clarity, and restraint, shaped through his work with Miles Davis and numerous leading artists of the period. On “Moanin’,” he establishes a swing feel that leaves more space for Timmons. As with all Drum Transcriptions on this channel, the notation presented here represents an interpretive based on repeated listening. Transcriptions are working documents rather than definitive statements. They are intended to support focused listening and practical study, encouraging viewers to compare written material with the original recording and develop their own analytical perspective.
