n this talk, Paul describes six challenges that together are potentially overwhelming for land-based producers in Aotearoa New Zealand. Agriculture has long been the backbone of New Zealand’s economy. Food and fibre exports continue to make up most of our merchandise exports. World prices are currently high, but several storm clouds are on the horizon Paul argues we need to face up to this risk by creating new institutions for strategic collaboration by private and public sector leaders. He draws on the Statement of Hope produced by Future Farmers in April 2025 to explain our opportunity to lead the world in the future of sustainable, high-value food production. About the Speaker Dr Paul Dalziel is Research Economist at the Wellbeing Economy Alliance Aotearoa. He was Professor of Economics at Lincoln University between 2002 and 2024, where he helped lead several research programmes on global agrifood value chains. He has published more than 400 scientific papers and reports. His eleven books include Wellbeing Economics: The capabilities approach to prosperity published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2018, which has recorded more than 115,000 chapter downloads.
