I want to talk about how the original two games hold up. But for this to all make sense, we really need to go over how all the Pikimin games ended up on Switch in the first place. Pikmin 3 was the first game ported over - it was previously only on the Wii U. Next, Pikmin 4 was announced, a brand new game built specifically for the Switch. But, then, just one-month before it released, Nintendo dropped both Pikmin 1 and 2. These are GameCube classics, and they’re the ones I want to focus on here, because I had never played a Pikmin game before the Switch era. But after playing and loving the 3rd and 4th games, I had to find out if the first two games held up. Spoiler: they’re fantastic. Pikmin 1 is, by far, the most simple game in the series, but what’s surprising is how perfectly they nailed the core formula and gameplay loop on the very first attempt. Pikmin 2 elaborates in some pretty big ways. Multitasking is much easier, thanks to an added playable character. There are new Pikmin types, and there is much less of an emphasis on time management. Instead, this one’s more about exploration and combat. If you’re looking to get into Pikmin, there’s really no bad place to start, all the games are fantastic. But, since everything is available on the Switch - I’d probably recommend playing the games in order, if you’re able to. I kind of wish I could go back and play them all in order and see how they gradually evolve over time!
