Producing Seedlings from Mother Trees Through Inarching, Saddle, Cleft Grafting One of the most difficult aspects of producing planting materials of high value fruit trees is the grafting of a mature scion to a young rootstock. For those new to seedlings production, grafting is the asexual plant propagation that joins the scion from a mature tree to a young rootstock to heal and grow as one plant. This system also ensures clonal production or the exact copy of the genetic qualities of the mother tree and shortens the fruiting period from the usual 6 years to about 3 years in the case of the Abuyog Sweet Jackfruit. Grafting Jackfruit using the Cleft Method where the scion is inserted into the stem of a young rootstock, however, is not easy and the survival rate is as low as 50% because of the presence of the latex or the sap which results in the rotting of the scion. This led my main plant propagator, Melchor Salinas, to try other methods of grafting technique, including Inarching and Saddle Grafting. In this accompanying video, Salinas demonstrates the “Inarching” method of grafting which he said involves the insertion of the stem of the young rootstock into the stem of a scion without detaching it from the tree. This method, however, is laborious as the polybags containing the rootstocks need to be tied to the branches or hung. But Melchor said this is the most effective grafting method ensuring a survival rate of 98%. In the succeeding video, Melchor will demonstrate the “Saddle Grafting” method which he is also trying to use in propagating our Abuyog Sweet Jackfruit. #FarmIsTheBestClassroom!
