This Is Lake Tahoe, A Large Freshwater Lake, Situated On The Border Between The US States Of California And Nevada, In The Western Part Of The Contiguous United States. Lake Tahoe Was Formed About Two Million Years Ago, during the early Pleistocene epoch, Through A Combination Of Tectonic, Volcanic, And Glacial Processes. The Lake Covers An Area Of Roughly 500 Square Kilometres, Making it The Largest Freshwater Lake In The Sierra Nevada Range, And The Largest Alpine Lake In North America. The lake is approximately 35 km long and has a maximum width of 19 km, with a total shoreline length of 116 km. One Of The Key Features Of Lake Tahoe Is Its Immense Depth. The Lake Has An Average Depth Of 305 meters, And With A Maximum Depth Of 501 Meters, It is The Fourth Deepest Lake In North America And The Second Deepest Lake Within The United States, after Oregon’s Crater Lake, Which Has A Maximum Depth Of Roughly 594 Meters. Lake Tahoe’s great depth, gives it an enormous water volume, about 150 cubic kilometers, or roughly 39 trillion gallons. This makes it the largest lake by volume in the United States outside of the five Great Lakes. One of Lake Tahoe’s most remarkable features is its exceptional water clarity. In some areas, you can see as deep as 70 feet. This clarity is largely due to the lake’s high elevation and low levels of nutrient pollution, which help limit algae growth. The lake’s clarity and color are so distinct, that NASA has used satellite imaging of Tahoe to calibrate sensors for monitoring water clarity on Earth and even on other planets. Due to its deep and clear water, Lake Tahoe Was also an important test site during the Cold War, when it was used by the U S Navy for submarine and torpedo tests. Lake Tahoe's Watershed Is Essential For Providing Clean Drinking Water To Millions Of People In California And Nevada. The Lake's Drainage Basin Covers An Area Of Roughly 1,310 square kilometres. Over Sixty-three rivers and Streams Flow Into Lake Tahoe, The Largest Being The Upper Truckee River, The nearby Fallen Leaf Lake also drains into Lake Tahoe via the Taylor Creek. The lake’s only outlet is the Lower Truckee River, which flows northeast through Tahoe City and Reno, before ending in pyramid Lake, which is an endorheic lake and doesn't have any outlet. Because of this closed system, Lake Tahoe’s water never reaches the ocean, a rarity for major North American lakes. Lake Tahoe Is A Major Tourist Attraction In Both Nevada And California. The Area Around Lake Tahoe Is A Popular Destination For Outdoor Activities Year-round, Including Skiing In Winter And Hiking, Biking, And Boating In Summer. There Are Several Notable Cities And Towns Around Its Shoreline And Nearby Areas. The Biggest City On The Lake Is South Lake Tahoe, California, which lies adjacent to Stateline. Other Towns Include Tahoe City, Kings Beach, And Incline Village. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Divider by Chris Zabriskie http://chriszabriskie.com Creative Commons — Attribution 4.0 International — CC BY 4.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/_divider Music promoted by Audio Library • Divider – Chris Zabriskie (No Copyright Mu... –––––––––––––––––––––– ://chriszabriskie.com
