Free Country - Songs W/ Strings I originally didn't plan on using any 4-track stuff for this record. When I began writing the songs that eventually became the record, over two years ago, I was also starting to take classes on DAW production and engineering. I figured I would record everything on Pro Tools and Logic and just learn as I went. That was wishful thinking. I still remember trying to record some song that didn't end up making the album, and I did 4 demos of it before realizing that I was just going through the motions. I put the piano and acoustic guitar tracks down quickly, but doing the vocals found me going through 10 takes and listening to each phrase for the "best" one. I had too many choices. I would have an idea for putting a synth on a bridge and next thing I know it's 4 hours later and I'm still auditioning different virtual instruments. Out of frustration I decided to record a song for fun using my Tascam 244 and by the end of the night it was finished. There was something familiar and inspiring about tracking to tape again and a sense of "I need to get this take correct because there's no comping of tracks," that really squeezes the best performances out of me. Where I needed a bit more fidelity than the 244 could offer I went with the Fostex Model 80 which records up to 8 tracks on 1/4" tape. The great thing about using analog these days is that you also have the option to import all the finished tracks into your DAW and do edits and mixing in the box. These are strange days we're in, but for people recording music this is the promised land. All I want is for people to get something out of this music the way I get something out of others work. Is that too much to ask? Roll n' Rock. -Jason For more of my noise, or to buy actual physical media check out...
