Cappella Pratensis sings Nicolas Gombert’s Aspice Domine. This is a particularly striking piece by the Franco-Flemish composer Nicolas Gombert, which is thought to have been set as a response to the horrors of the sacking of Rome in 1527 by Charles V. The text is as follows: Prima pars: Aspice, Domine, quia facta est desolata civitas plena divitiis.Sedet in tristitia, domina gentium.Non est qui consoletur eam, nisi tu, Deus noster. Behold, O Lord, how the city full of riches is become desolate. She sits in mourning, the mistress of the nations. There is none to comfort her save only thou, our God. Secunda pars: Muro tuo inexpugnabili circumcinge nos domine et armis tuae potentiae protege nos semper libera nos deus noster Lord, surround us with your impregnable wall and protect us with the arms of your power, our God, always deliver us This performance took place as part of a project to increase the online accessibility of the manuscripts and prints held by the Burns Library. As is usual of Cappella Pratensis' approach, the performance was sung directly from historical notation, in this case a reproduction of copy of Jacques Moderne's Motteti del Fiore primus liber cum quatuor vocibus (1532.)
