Main Boss Theme from Brothership. Original composer: Hideki Sakamoto ~~~ Yep. Quite a lot to say about this one, my process, how I felt I've improved since the last MegaDrive track, and how I've been honing my skills in Furnace for this to be my best work, yet. ~~~ This one was a lot fun to do, as I say every time. Once again, I heavily abused the third FM channel's 4-Operator mode to add more polyphony via basic sines, especially in the middle of the track. More interestingly, at the beginning, I used the 4-Op mode to give the brass a very full timbre by mixing the operators of various brassy instruments. You can sort of think of it as birthing a new instrument from multiple parents. Of course, I also made use of the MegaDrive's Dual PCM feature. I didn't go nearly as crazy with the Mario and Luigi voice clips as I did with the Superstar Saga battle theme, but to mirror Brothership, I wanted to put a focus on Luigi. I downloaded this very large program called the Ultimate Vocal Remover v5 just so I could separate Luigi's iconic "Leave it to me!" voice clip and make use of it in this track. (https://ultimatevocalremover.com/) (https://github.com/Anjok07/ultimatevo...) I even went the extra mile and added a couple of the Luigi Logic FMVs at the proper moments. My laptop is not very good, so I hope y'all appreciate that this took many more hours than it normally would just for me to wait on boring old rendering. Thanks to @ClockworkCrystal for ripping these, so I wouldn't have to bother (not that I *would've*...) • Luigi Logic Green Screen I even made the thumbnail Luigi-centric by depicting his "Luigi Logic" in Superstar Saga form. (Notice how the exclamation in the "Advance" has the Luigi Logic L.) That Gobblick sprite also took a while to make, and if you look closely, you'll notice the sprites and background are 9-bit RGB, like the Genesis. I manually recolored Mario and Luigi, which was quick and simple, but got a bit lazy for the background, so I just used a palette quantizer. I took a hybrid approach for the Gobblick sprite; tracing it from a scaled down screenshot. (The backgrounds are also just edited from Superstar Saga, as well.) (https://rilden.github.io/tiledpalette...) One more cool thing to mention is how every part of the Genesis is used as the lead, at least once (PSG at the very beginning, FM and PCM interchangeably throughout the rest). ~~~ May as well talk a little about Brothership, while I'm here. I think I'd put it above PiT, and behind BIS, making it my second favorite M&L. In terms of its soundtrack, I'm still not sure where I'd put it. I've seen many think this boss theme lacks a certain kick the older ones had, and I agree. It has its own kick, and I think that applies to the soundtrack as a whole. Its biggest strength was its huge pool of NPCs. In every M&L prior, barring Dream Team, I've always felt the worlds were a bit unpopulated, especially PiT (though, that makes sense for that game). It took me about 86-87 hours to beat, mostly because I tried to read EVERY piece of dialogue, and man, does it change frequently! Of course, I also completed all the side quests as soon as physically possible. Glohm Gobblick with Level 28 bros was tough, but the most fun I had in the game. I didn't even game over enough times to see the easy mode show up. I thought they got rid of it until after I beat the game and saw someone else say it happened to them. lel The biggest con, I'd say, are the bosses. Not the actual fights, themselves. They're some of my favorites in the whole series. I just wish we had a bit more than the handful we got. A Challenge Node of sorts was also dearly missed. I don't know if Paper Jam had one, but I greatly appreciated that BIS and Dream Team gave us an optional boss gauntlet, and I would've appreciated it even more for this game. I understand the glohmed lighthouse bosses are supposed to substitute for them (or at least, that's the impression they gave me) but it's just not at all the same. : ( Anyways, Maykit supremacy! ... ...
