The Battle of Buçaco, fought on September 27, 1810, was a pivotal engagement during the Peninsular War, part of the larger Napoleonic Wars. The battle took place in central Portugal, where the Anglo-Portuguese army under the Duke of Wellington faced the French forces led by Marshal André Masséna. Masséna’s objective was to capture Lisbon and secure French dominance in the Iberian Peninsula. Wellington strategically positioned his forces along the ridge of Buçaco, taking advantage of the terrain to repel the French advance. Despite repeated and determined assaults by Masséna's troops, the steep slopes and well-coordinated defense proved insurmountable. The French suffered heavy casualties, with thousands killed or wounded, while the Allied losses were considerably lighter. This decisive defensive victory showcased Wellington’s military acumen and the growing effectiveness of the Portuguese troops trained under British command. Though the French were forced to retreat from the battlefield, Masséna continued his campaign, eventually encountering the formidable Lines of Torres Vedras, a fortified defensive system protecting Lisbon.
