SORRY ABOUT THE VIDEO ANGLE!! I thought it auto flipped... apparently not... ** 12/2024 UPDATED + FAQs ****** *********************FAQ's***************************** WHY BEST? WHY NOT TRACK ACTUATORS / WINCH / LINEAR ACTUATORS? Track actuators = VERY expensive. 60" are about $330 EACH, wiring req. for all 4 Winch = Loud, heavy, bulky, only 1 pull cable Linear actuators = limited travel, still expensive, wiring req. for all 4 WHICH MOTOR? -Be sure to get the 100W 12v motor Model number (zd1633r). It has a higher torque than most of the regular 12v worm gear motors. -If you increase the strap wrap diameter (bigger shaft or 2 strap winds instead of 4) you'll need a higher gear ratio / larger torque. The zd1633r motor is rated at 10Nm with 50Nm max. The stronger versions aren't super easy to find, but here's two Ive found: ZD1735 or JM-039 -You can use a smaller motor that goes slower for cheaper, as long as it has an equivalent torque. WHY NOT CABLE? -Cable requires pulleys, is loud, grabs hair, heavier, and if winding on a shaft, really needs a guide WHAT WIRE/FUSE? IS THE SOLENOID NECESSARY? -Make sure to use thick enough wire! In the video I have 8ga, I tried 12ga and it slowed down noticeably from the voltage drop. I would recommend no less than 10ga. The zd1633r max pull is 40A at stall, so Id do a 30-35A fuse. -Yes you could use a high current switch, but there are better low current options, hence the solenoid. CAN I USE A PLANETARY MOTOR TO FIT IT INSIDE? -Yes! I hadn't found one when I made this video, but several apparently now have. Downside is they are quite expensive. If you find one post it up!!! I have yet to try one, but from some research, one that looked promising is the ATO-BDM-3200R62 from ATO with the 1/139 reduction (yet to be tried though) DO YOU NEED RAILS? -NO, that's the point of the design, They are NOT necessary. (several van designs like Eurolift use this concept and do not have anything. With a 50:1 worm gear, it does not unwind without power. -You can add some fold down legs or wall stops if you want it fixed when sleeping on it. I have, since added Vertical E track so I can set it at different heights, without it being a swing. WHAT FRAME MATERIAL? -Wood is the cheapest but heavier, not as strong, warps over time, needs painting, etc -I recommend Aluminum T slot like 2080, 3090, 4080 etc (something with enough height clear the rolled strap on the shaft). I found Misumi to be cheapest for the 2080. -Aluminum bleacher planks (you can get 2x6 offline), aluminum C channel (surprisingly more expensive than the other 2^) **********GENERAL PARTS LIST:************** (links as of 2/14/2025) -12V 50-35rpm 100W [zd1633r] wiper motor (ebay or amazon). https://www.ebay.com/itm/165751668991 Frame material (I used 2080 Aluminum T-slot frame with 2040 T-slot supports, hardware, cornering and caps (Misumi and amazon) -5/8" Chromoly shaft (eBay, online metals, Stock Car Steel) -17mm (or 5/8" Pillow bearings (uxcell on Amazon) -5mm plywood ( lowes/Home Depot) [OR wood bed slats etc] -1" strap webbing ( rhino straps on amazon) {thinner is better for minimizing spool winding dia} -half round steel sliders ( from large ratchet straps from Walmart) or cheap aluminum winch fairlead plates https://www.walmart.com/ip/Hyper-Toug... -metal buckle slides for strap guides ( strapworks or amazon). https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072VYPV14?... -25mm yyst metal footman loops for strap guides (amazon) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V9NKM26?... *********STEPS************ -drill hole for motor boss -cut slots for straps to pass through (I carefully used a router) -mount motor -attach straps to shaft (I slotted shaft, fed the strap through, then filled shaft with epoxy) -mount bearings -mount slider guides -assemble frame, and supports -install top/plywood/slats (I used t-nuts to hold plywood (or self tapping screws) -I added felt sliders outside 3D CAD MODEL OF QUEEN BED (my exact build): https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/mode... 12/2024 update: Still going strong! I have made a few minor improvements; Ive since installed vertical E tracks for a multiple reasons; adjustable stop heights depending on what we have inside, as well as removable mounts for the bed straps, a tv, table and fold down couch). So now the bed is easily completely removed. We never added vent holes in the plywood, but have not noticed any remote signs of mold or anything of the sort. I have also added the same plastic soffit to the bottom, as well as LED lights and USB charge ports. If I could do it over again I would try to use a planetary gear motor. I will try to post an update video soon!
