The episode explores the power of South African Sign Language Language as an integral part of the identity of a people. It is at the heart of who they are, of their culture, of how they define themselves, and the most important legacy they pass to their children. Most linguists now agree that the relationship between “language and power” is a mutual relationship. Powerful institutions and individuals use language as both a means to construct their power and to maintain it. Sign language is regarded as a birthright for people born Deaf, as they belong to a cultural and linguistic community that uses sign language as a mother tongue or natural language to communicate? The first language of most Deaf people in South Africa who uses a capital ‘D’ for Deaf, is South African Sign Language. Recognition of South African Sign Language as an official language gives Deaf South Africans equal access to information, as well as learning, education, work and leisure opportunities. It liberates Deaf people as equal citizens. Guests: Dr Lucas Magongwa Ayesha Ramjugernath Hon Dr Newhoudt-Druchen (Member of Parliament) E-deaf App Jean Marie from DeafSA Atiyah Asmal from SociGO
