Chapter - 20 - We are doing Ex. 79, Ex. 80 (paragraph writing) in this video. Compound consonants (introduction) - video 137 link • Chapter-20 - Compound Consonants (Introduc... Compound Consonants - These are the sound of combinations of two consonants. These are KW, GW, WL, WHL, LR, RR, MP, MB and WH. 1. Initial W - A large initial hook adds w to k and g e.g queen, Gwynn. 2. Initial W and WH - A small initial hook to l represents w, and a large initial hook to l represents wh e.g well, whale. 3. Strokes L and R thickened - Downward l is thickened for the addition of r preceded by any lightly sounded vowel and downward r is thickened for the addition of -er only e.g valour, hirer 4. Addition of P or B to M - The curve m is thickened for the addition of p or b e.g hemp, emboss. 5. Aspirated W - The aspirate is added to stroke w by enlarging the hook e.g whistle, where. 6. Vowel preceding W - The initial hooks in wl and whl are read first. Therefore, if a vowel precedes w, the stroke form of w or wh must be written and not the hook e.g awhile 7. Stroke L and KW - After kw, l is written upward when followed by a vowel and downward when not followed by a vowel e.g squally, squall 8. Use of LR and RR signs - The form of l or r which is used in the root word is retained in the derivative eg. full, fuller, snore, snorer 9. Vowel after Final R- The thickened forms lr and rr must not be written finally if a vowel follows r e.g foolery, valorous 10 Hooked form of MP - An initial or final hook may be attached to the sign mp, mb e.g scamper, ambition. The sign mp, mb is not used when pr, br, pl or bl immediately follows m. e.g empress, emperor, embrace, embower For queries related to this subject, write an email on the id - [email protected] or you can write in comment box.
