The Dell PowerEdge R330 supports three types of drives: Serial-Attached SCSI (SAS), Serial ATA (SATA) and Solid State Drives (SSD). SAS drives have speeds of 10K to 15K RPM. SATA drives operate at speeds of 7.2K RPM. SSDs can run at speeds of 6GB/s or 12GB/s. The form factors of the drives you can use for the R330 depends on what chassis you have. The 4 Bay LFF accepts 3.5” drives and the 8 Bay SFF accepts 2.5” drives. For 2.5” SAS drives that maximum capacity per drive you can use is 2.4TB. For 2.5” SATA, the max you can use is 2TB. And for SSDs, the max you can use is 7.68TB. On the LFF, 3.5” side of things, you can achieve much greater capacities. Dell states that for LFF SAS drives, you can use capacities of 14TB. We have been able to put in 18TB drives. For SATA, Dell says that 16TB is that max. We’ve been able to use 18TB drives. Lastly for SSDs, the max is 7.68TB. We will also show you how to install a new drive into your R330. Installing drives into your system is very easy since the drives are hot swap, meaning you can install a drive while the server is running. We will also go over how to test your drives with Dell Diagnostics and HD Sentinel. Dell Diagnostics will test more than just the drives, but we will utilize this test to make sure our drives are performing well. Dell will provide an amber light for predictive failure. This is very common on 15K SAS drives because their bearings wear out over time. HD Sentinel is great for checking the Health Scores and Power On Hours for drives.
