Welcome to Appalachian Grandpa – where old mountain stories come alive. I'm here to share the untold tales from deep in the Appalachian hills, stories of family, struggle, wisdom, and the hard truths that shaped these mountains. In December of 1864, Russell Gregory—a 70-year-old cattleman and Union sympathizer in Cades Cove, Tennessee—made a decision that would cost him his life. Tired of watching Confederate raiders terrorize his community, he organized a militia of old men and ambushed Thomas's Legion at Abrams Creek. The ambush worked, driving the rebels back into North Carolina. But among those Confederate soldiers was Russell's own son, Charles, who recognized the distinctive boom of his father's rifle, "Old Long Tom." What happened next has been debated for over 160 years. Did Charles betray his father by revealing his location to Confederate officers, leading to Russell being dragged from his home and shot with his own rifle two weeks later? Or did Russell die weeks afterward confronting soldiers who had stolen his cattle, with Charles nowhere near the scene? Three different versions of this story have been passed down through generations, each told by people who believe they know the truth. Russell's tombstone reads "Murdered by North Carolina Rebels," but the full story is far more complicated than those four words suggest. This is the tragic tale of how the Civil War tore one Appalachian family apart, turning father against son and leaving behind a mystery that still haunts the descendants of Cades Cove. Join me on the porch as we explore the life of Russell Gregory, the ambush that changed everything, and the three conflicting accounts of his death that have kept historians and family members arguing for more than a century and a half. sources: https://mysmokymountainguide.com/gsmn... https://wheninyourstate.com/north-car... https://www.mysmokymountainvacation.c... https://archive.knoxnews.com/news/sto... https://www.thesmokies.com/tragedy-ca... 🔔 If this story got to you, hit subscribe and ring that bell. 💬 Leave a comment – I'd love to hear what you think. 👍 Give it a like if it spoke to your heart.
