I documented the install I did for my mom's garden this past winter. The kids helped out a ton. The coconut husk was expanded using a worm castings based tea. The potting mix was primarily coconut husk, worm castings, lava rock, and kelp. When you couple this technique with olla irrigation you can grow so much food on very little water. Remember that raised beds waste a lot of water in the desert. This is a far more efficient design that allows plants to thrive in our crazy hot environment. When coupled with olla's, the water that would normally drain out of a regular planter, will be recycled as it collects in the water reservoir. The wicking chambers (in this case the clay planters that are filled with the soil-less potting mix) will allow the water to wick up through the potting mix. This is sub-surface irrigation to the max. This is what plants like and they will be extremely healthy if you make a high quality potting mix for them to set roots in. Since they will have access to water on a regular basis, readily available nutrients, they will not stress out and attract bugs.
