This is another classic Chick Corea composition "500 Miles High" - it was originally recorded for the album "Light As A Feather", which is an album that I first heard when I was in high school and playing mostly drums. It's a cool melody over some modal changes and a slightly odd form, typical Chick Corea curveballs being thrown here. I just wanted to have some fun. The process: 1) Recorded the vibes part in one take. I don't know if it was the coffee or what, but I had some adrenaline flowing for some reason. It's a little over the top, but that's life and I'll stick by it. I was playing along with a loop from Logic. 2) I recorded the bass part next, and I surprised myself by doing it in one take. Again, maybe it was the coffee. 3) I recorded the keys part - yes, it's a cheesy Fender Rhodes sound from within Logic. I added a little distortion (couldn't make up my mind and erred on the side of probably having too little). The original Chick recording has some sweet distortion on the Rhodes.. but I couldn't replicate that vibe so I didn't try too hard. It was done in one take. 4) I recorded the drums - this actually took me three takes, from which the video is made up of mostly take 2, and the very ending from take 3. WHAT?!?!? EDITING?!?! That's not allowed! Actually, it is.. I was kinda torn, but it was an easy edit to make, and maybe added 10 minutes to the whole video editing process as well. If I hadn't told you you wouldn't know. At least I'm being honest. 4) After recording the drums, I felt like I wanted to redo the bass part, so I recorded two new takes of it, but I kept screwing up and it wasn't much of an improvement over the first one, so I decided to stick with that, since that's what I was listening to when I recorded the drums anyway. Music, like life, will have imperfections. So it is. I hope you enjoy these videos! Please subscribe, etcetera.
