(27 Jul 2014) Thousands of chanting demonstrators have taken to the streets of Casablanca to voice their support for Palestinians in Gaza - and to call for an end to Israel's military offensive. The demonstration was organised by leftist parties. Chanting against Israel and Western leaders. These protesters have come out in support of Palestinians in Gaza - as attacks continue to be launched by Israel and Hamas. The 20-day war has killed more than 1,060 Palestinians, mainly civilians, according to Palestinian health officials. Israel has lost 43 soldiers, while two Israeli civilians and a Thai worker in Israel were killed by rocket and mortar attacks from Gaza. Each side remains far apart on terms for a final cease-fire. Hamas has demanded that a crippling Israeli and Egyptian blockade of Gaza be lifted and Israel has asked that Gaza be demilitarised. Nambila Mounib, General Secretary of the Unified Socialist Party (PSU), which has helped to organise this protest, says the world needs to act. "The message we want to send to the international community and to the Zionist entity is that it is high time to stop the embargo in all in its forms on our people in Palestine, so that these people can determine their rights and build an independent state on their territory. And also the return of the refugees so that they can live in dignity with the other people of this world." After initially rejecting an Israeli offer on Saturday for a 24-hour truce, Hamas said today that it's agreed to hold fire ahead of the Eid al-Fitr holiday marking the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. But as Israel's Cabinet met to discuss the offer and the ongoing war, rockets rained down on southern Israel and Israeli strikes could be heard in Gaza. Each side is blaming the other for scuttling the efforts. "All the people are with the Palestinian people. All the people are condemning the silence of the regimes and the crimes against against humanity," says Kadija Riyadiya, Deputy Chair of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH). "In Morocco, we condemn the policy of normalisation with Israel that is going in all sectors such as trade, buying of weapons and also in the academic sector against the will of the movements that are asking for end end to all ties with Israel." Israel says it launched the war on Hamas on 8 July to halt relentless rocket fire. It expanded its assault over a week later, sending ground troops into the Gaza Strip to demolish Hamas' wide network of tunnels, which Israel sees as a strategic threat.
