Hyphema is bleeding inside the eye or inside the anterior chamber of the eye. The most common cause of Hyphema is any trauma. Blunt trauma causes Hyphema, maybe any shuttlecock injury, cricket ball injury causes Hyphema. Hyphema other causes are blood dyscariasis like sickle cell anemia or bleeding abnormalities. other causes are diabetes or any form of blood dyscariasis which causes excessive bleeding can also lead to Hyphema. Treatment depends on the cause. Most of the times the Hyphema is self-limiting. Unless the Hyphema is more than three fourth of the chamber and associated with raised intraocular pressure, then one needs to evacuate the Hyphema, the other causes are self-limiting and the blood inside the eye gets absorbed. If a person develops Hyphema after an injury it means there is some amount of damage to the eye. These patients over a period of time can develop a condition called as angle recession. Angle recession can later on lead to glaucoma. so a person who has had a Hyphema should always go for a regular checkup, mention the incidence of this Hyphema and check for the intraocular pressure.
