The Clements Library welcomed Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and #1 New York Times bestselling author Rick Atkinson on May 13, 2025 at 4:30 pm, to the campus of the University of Michigan. Atkinson joined Paul Erickson, the Randolph G. Adams Director of the Clements Library, for a discussion about his recent book, "The Fate of the Day: The War for America, Fort Ticonderoga to Charleston, 1777–1780." In his research, Atkinson drew extensively from the Clements Library’s remarkable collection of American Revolutionary materials. This is the second volume of Atkinson’s landmark Revolution Trilogy. Timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the beginning of the American Revolution, Atkinson’s brilliant account of the lethal conflict between the Americans and the British offers not only deeply researched and spectacularly dramatic history, but also a fresh perspective on the demands that a democracy makes on each of its citizens.
