This video was taken by permission of Mingo Logan Mining. 4/27/2002 This is VERY rare to get on any mining company property. After checking in with the guard shack, we had to watch a safety film and be certified. After passing the certification, we received passes to be on the property safely. We start out with the U-81, NS #8821-#6646 as they crest the grade in the tunnel on the Gilbert Branch. He sets up the dynamic brakes as he drops down grade to the connection with the Pokey mainline. The J-24 helper, NS #9077 passes on the rear of U-81, and you can see the Ben Creek spur as the helper rounds the curve. On the Pokey mainline at Wharncliff, the U-24, NS #2517-#2582 waits for the U-81 to clear so he can run down past the signal, and get the switch for the branch and make a backup move to the Ben Creek spur. As U-24 pulls down to clear the signal, we get a wave and a friendly toot as a eastbound coal train roars pass with #9678-6654. Hope you enjoyed this slow going clip. But that is railroading in the coal fields, and on mountainous branches. Many coal branches involved backing up the entire branch to get to the mine, and caboose where used. Lots of these mines are shut down now, and branches are just a memory. What is left down on the Pocahontas District, is just a memory.
