In this video, I walk through Design Miami and Art Basel Miami Beach and share how I look at collectible design as a practicing architect. For me, fairs like these helps to learn about experimental and new materials and approaches to design. I talk about functional art and how architects and interior designers use collectible pieces to shape atmosphere, define zones, and give projects a strong identity - especially in hospitality, retail, and cultural spaces but residentials spaces as well. I also look at the role of galleries, why seeing these objects before they enter private collections matters, and how design fairs often become testing grounds for ideas. Along the way, I highlight several galleries and projects that stood out to me, including Tuleste Factory, David Gill Gallery, Todd Merrill Studio, and Garrido Gallery, as well as the Kohler installation designed by Crosby Studios, featuring work by David Franklin. I also touch on glass as a material, digital and conceptual art (Beeple’s Regular Animals), and the differences between Design Miami and Art Basel. For me, visiting fairs like this is a way to step back from day-to-day project work and think about where architecture, interiors, and design culture are heading - often through smaller, more experimental objects and materials. ⏱ TIMECODES 00:00 – Intro 00:22 – Design Miami Beach: what the fair is about 00:45 – Who comes to Design Miami 01:16 – What is collectible art? 01:46 – What galleries do and why they matter 02:20 – Galleries that stood out: Tuleste Factory, David Gill Gallery, Todd Merrill Studio 02:56 – Why it’s unique to see these pieces before they’re sold 03:13 – Kohler installation by Crosby Studios (featuring David Franklin) 03:33 – What is functional art?
