Requested by Spooka and one of my favorite songs. There was a time when I would listen to this song every day. This performance from the Tour16-17 From Depression To ________ [Mode Of The Marrow Of A Bone] live is really impressive with Kyo hitting every note and I also like the lyrics a lot. There are quite a few annotations for this one so have a look if you like. Translation by me. Annotations to THE PLEDGE: "The boy carrying his loneliness ... The meaning of there being nothing in the clear sky" - This time I left out exactly what is omitted in the original lyrics, the verb, but I think it still doesn't come across that well in English. The boy [carrying his loneliness] does something with the meaning [of there being nothing in the clear sky]. Possibly he looks up at it, or tries to grasp it,... This is left to your imagination. Also, "carrying" can be taken as literal or figurative (him actually carrying it versus for example being emotionally burdened with it). "Why is spring the ideal" - While I translated this as "ideal", it is a bit different from the usual "ideal" Kyo uses (理想 risou). The one used here is 理念 (rinen), which is more about principles and what ought to be rather than just how you'd like it to be personally. I guess in that sense it also has more to do with ideology than 理想 (risou) would. To make the difference even clearer: When you're talking about what your ideal partner would be like, you'd definitely use 理想 (risou). When you're talking about your ideal of how human rights must be implemented, you'd rather use 理念 (rinen, which is used in this song. 理想 could be used, but the statement would then have a more personal nuance). "I can't hear anymore" - Grammar to really emphasize the statement is used. Same goes for "No one can heal me" at the end of the song. If we take the example of "No one can heal me", the grammar adds weight to the statement as if saying "[Definitely] No one can [ever, under any circumstances] heal me.". "Even now I'm captivated" - This is an expression literally saying "to have one's heart taken away" and meaning "to be captivated/fascinated". In English we have similar expressions like "to have one's heart stolen [by someone, usually]", but "to be captivated" is very close to how it's used in Japanese. "My seedy voice" - His voice actually "became seedy". For the verb used we would use expressions like "to go downhill" in English. "I still don't know how to live smoothly" - Literally "I still can't live smoothly/successfully/skilfully". I also considered translating this as "I'm still not good at living". "Even if I make the best out of tomorrow" - "Tomorrow" can be understood as a synonym for "the future". The line can also be read as "Even if tomorrow/from now on I make the best out of it/everything", but I think that and how I translated it aren't that much different. "[If your heart full of feelings still blooms -] Try answering me" - Probably my favorite line. Note that "Try answering me" is suddenly very forceful, could be read as somewhat aggressive. Also, "Try" is not to be understood as "see if you can answer me" but in the sense of "to try sth. out", as if saying "how about you try answering me?". "I won't be healed" - As I said this is a song I've listened to over and over, but I only now had a look at the official lyrics and was surprised to see that the repetition of this last line is not actually part of them. --------------- I do not own Dir En Grey or any of their music or performances.
