In this presentation delivered during the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM), Dr Chiara Giangrande introduces NeuroBioStand, a European metrology project focused on the standardisation of biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases. The talk explains why reliable and traceable measurement of biomarkers is essential to reduce variability in clinical testing — particularly as new therapies become available for conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. Dr Giangrande outlines how the project brings together national metrology institutes, clinicians, academics and industry partners under the umbrella of international clinical chemistry collaboration. She presents work across three technical areas, including phosphorylated tau, neurofilament light chain and glial fibrillary acidic protein, highlighting the role of isotope dilution mass spectrometry, certified reference materials and reference measurement procedures.
