Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) and how to remember the Lab Values. FYI it is also called a “CHEM-7” by some medical professionals. For me it helps to know the general reference range for each lab value so you can quickly decide what is normal and what is not normal. I also got PIMPed on this at several hospitals. Every lab has slightly different values for what they consider normal so as long as you know the general range you will be good. The order they are supposed to be read in when reading them back to a doctor is: Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Bicarbonate, BUN, Creatinine, Glucose. The way to remember them… Sodium. Since this is the first one on the list of ranges and LIMITS, think of the old Twitter character limit which was 140 characters. So roughly 140 mEq/L but the range is typically 135-145. Potassium. On the Periodic Table of Elements and on the panel it is abbreviated as “K”. If you make the okay sign with your hand, you are holding up the number 3, and the circle can act as a decimal point. Then just simply open up your hand and you have a “5”. So the normal range is 3.5 - 5 mEq/L. Chloride. Chlorine always reminds me of swimming pools. So when it is hot out you go swimming! 95 - 105 degrees would be hot weather and you would want to dive into a pool so remember that 95-105mEq/L is roughly the normal values for chloride. Bicarbonate. The prefix “Bi” means 2, so this one is all about the twos. It is 22 to 32 approximately as the normal range. BUN. Blood Urea Nitrogen. BUN can remind you not to touch girls BUNs when under 18 years old, and under 18mg/dL is the normal value for the lab marker. PS we a talking about a girls bun in her hair, get your mind out of the gutter. Creatinine. It is the normal breakdown of muscle tissue. When you are at the gym, you typically do 6-12 reps of an exercise, so remember 0.6 - 1.2 mg/dL is the normal range for creatinine. Glucose. Just think of it this way, if you pass the test you get a lollipop (aka sugar). They say C’s get degrees right? So 70 - 100% would be passing a test and 70-100 mg/dL is roughly the normal range for glucose. Hope this was helpful to you! Let me know what you think!
