We start our walk from Şehit Fethi Bey Street. On this busy street leading to the Çankaya Neighborhood of Kemeraltı, we notice the incredible traffic noise of the city. This problem, one of Turkey’s biggest, seems like it will continue until people are sufficiently educated. Even doctors, lawyers, or university graduates wandering these streets do not always know how to behave in traffic, so we enter Kemeraltı accompanied by the constant sound of car horns. Next, we reach 853 Street. Here, small shops, workshops, cozy cafés, and places to grab a bite are scattered along the street. As we move forward, we approach the crowds shopping. This busy atmosphere is caused both by the high number of shops on Anafartalar Street and by the fact that this street serves as a key route to navigate Kemeraltı. We continue straight through and arrive at Kestelli Street. On Kestelli Street, there are mostly textile workshops and clothing stores. In this partially open traffic area, we encounter reckless drivers who seem to be racing like rally drivers. We also see cute cats in front of houses; however, their lives are constantly at risk due to these careless drivers. Then we reach Eşrefpaşa Street, which feels like a complete trash market. The sidewalks and roads are occupied by people, with only a single person not lighting a barbecue; the scene is chaotic and messy. In these areas, where the local population has decreased, traffic is so bad that even traffic police are ineffective, and the roads lack proper markings, leading us through a terrible four-way junction towards Basmane. Around us, people are not smiling, speaking rudely, and shouting at each other. The slum neighborhoods have firmly taken over the city center. Before heading to even worse areas, we turn our route back towards the seaside. Finally, we complete our walk at Kordon Beach, enjoying the refreshing view of the Aegean as we end this hot one-hour walking tour.
