The Rufous Treepie is a clever and vocal bird found throughout India. Watch it in action as it hops through trees and scavenges for food. Witness the fascinating life of the Rufous Treepie (Dendrocitta vagabunda) in Pakistan! This video features stunning moments of adult treepies feeding, playing with their own reflection in a mirror, and a heartwarming rescue of baby chicks in Islamabad. 🎥 Captured in natural and urban settings 🐣 Includes rescued chicks getting care 🌳 Filmed in Haripur & Islamabad, Pakistan during 2020 to 2025 Scientific Classification • Kingdom: Animalia • Phylum: Chordata • Class: Aves • Order: Passeriformes • Family: Corvidae • Genus: Dendrocitta • Species: Dendrocitta vagabunda The Rufous Treepie is a striking member of the crow family, known for its rich rufous and grey plumage, long graduated tail, and strong, slightly curved beak. The head, neck, and upper breast are a sooty grey to black, while the back and belly show a warm rufous tone. The wings are a mix of black and white with conspicuous white patches, and the long tail is tipped with white, enhancing its visual appeal in flight. Occurrence and Distribution This bird is widely distributed across the Indian subcontinent, including India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and parts of Sri Lanka. It is commonly found in forests, groves, gardens, and urban green spaces, adapting well to both wild and human-modified habitats. Its broad ecological tolerance allows it to thrive from dry deciduous forests to suburban parks. Habits and Behavior The Rufous Treepie is omnivorous and highly opportunistic in its diet, consuming fruits, seeds, insects, small reptiles, bird eggs, and even carrion. It is an agile forager, often seen hopping between branches or gliding between trees with a distinctive call—a harsh, chattering sound often heard before the bird is seen. It is generally seen singly or in pairs, although small family groups may be observed outside the breeding season. Breeding and Nesting The species typically breeds during the warmer months, with peak nesting observed from March to July depending on the region. Pairs construct cup-shaped nests high in trees using twigs and plant fibers, often well-concealed among dense foliage. While the Rufous Treepie is known to build its own nests, occasional reports suggest that it may lay eggs in abandoned nests of other large birds, such as crows. However, it is not a habitual brood parasite, unlike cuckoos. Clutch size ranges from 3 to 5 eggs, which are pale and speckled. Both parents participate in incubation and in caring for the young, displaying strong pair bonds and cooperative behavior. #rufoustreepie #BirdRescue #PakistanWildlife #Haripur #Islamabad #Birdwatching #DendrocittaVagabunda #TreepieChicks #wildlifepakistan #BiodiversiGrapher References: • Khan, R.
