LSO – Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique conducted by Sir Simon Rattle "Dies Irae"—the Day of Wrath. From The Lion King to The Shining and Star Wars, this ancient melody has become the ultimate soundtrack for fear and death in cinema. But it was Hector Berlioz who first unleashed its full terrifying power in the orchestral world. Sir Simon Rattle leads the London Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, Op. 14. Often described as one of the most "pathological" and revolutionary works in music history, this symphony tells the semi-autobiographical story of an artist’s self-destructive obsession with a woman. The work is unified by the famous idée fixe (fixed idea)—a recurring melody representing the beloved that transforms throughout the five movements. The narrative takes the listener on a journey from romantic longing and a glittering ball to an opium-fueled nightmare involving murder, a march to the guillotine, and a grotesque witches' sabbath. Berlioz’s orchestration brings these hallucinations to life with shocking realism, from the rolling thunder of the countryside to the sound of a severed head falling into a basket. This performance captures every nuance of the work's romantic intensity and macabre brilliance. -- TIMESTAMPS -- 00:00 Opening 00:36 I. Rêveries – Passions (Reveries – Passions) 16:00 II.
