Relax on a calm, early afternoon ride through the heart of the Bay Area's Rapid Transit system, as a 10-car San Francisco Airport train travels from Oakland's northern neighborhoods to the city's downtown area on a sunny weekday in the East Bay. This is the first time, since BART opened in September 1972, the southbound journey spanning MacArthur and 12th Street/Oakland City Center has ever been filmed. Three of the current five lines run through this section during most operating hours, with two of them connecting travelers to San Francisco. Following 12th Street/Oakland City Center Station, trains on the Pittsburg/Bay Point-SFO and Richmond-Millbrae lines continue west through BART's Oakland tunnel toward San Francisco and the peninsula. Trains on the Richmond-Fremont route, instead, head south to Lake Merritt Station and the city of San Leandro. 12th Street/Oakland City Center is also the last suggested transfer point for commuters on the two San Francisco lines to switch to the Fremont train for access to Fremont and Dublin/Pleasanton. MacArthur is the transit agency's first meeting point for trains coming from the Richmond and Pittsburg/Bay Point termini situated at opposite ends of Contra Costa County.
