Corbin-Hagen Duo Timothy Hagen, flute Ben Corbin, piano Recorded live in performance at Louisiana State University March 26, 2023 Invocation for solo flute was commissioned by Marianne Gedigian as part of a collection of 10 caprices meant to stimulate the imaginations of young flutists. The work is meant to serve as a prelude, setting the tone for what is to come next. In this case, the piece segues into Reena Esmail's gorgeous Jhula Jhule. A rhapsody of sorts on a traditional Indian lullaby the composer's grandmother sang to her as a child, Jhula Jhule contains beautifully expressive melodic writing and a marriage of western classical and Indian elements, distinct hallmarks of Esmail's style. As a set, my piece Invocation and Reena Esmail's piece Jhula Jhule open the "Dreaming/Being" recitals Ben and I have been playing, meant to inspire what we are calling "imagination journeys" in our audiences.
