Why one Sherman tank loader used a broken hand mirror to aim his gun during WW2 — and destroyed three German Panzers in four minutes. September 17th, 1944. Private First Class Eddie Kowalski, a twenty-two-year-old loader in a Sherman tank outside Arracourt, France. His gunner was dead, his commander wounded, and a Panzer IV was closing at four hundred yards — right in the Sherman's "dead zone" where gun sights couldn't aim low enough to hit enemy hulls. Kowalski picked up a broken hand mirror from the turret floor and held it above the periscope at a forty-five-degree angle. The reflection let him see what the Sherman's periscope couldn't show. Every training manual said this was impossible. Tank doctrine called it improvised nonsense. They were wrong. By the end of that day, twelve other tank commanders in Fourth Armored Division started doing what Kowalski had done. The technique spread unofficially, crew to crew, gunner to gunner. Fourth Armored destroyed eighty-seven German tanks using mirror-assisted gunnery between September 17th and October 3rd, 1944 — the best kill ratio of any American armored engagement in Europe. 🔔 Subscribe for more untold WW2 stories: / @wwii-records 👍 Like this video if you learned something new 💬 Comment below: What other WW2 tactics should we cover? #worldwar2 #ww2history #ww2 #wwii #ww2records
