Two years ago, I looked at the carbon footprint of Brittany Ferries’ Bretagne — a beautiful ship with a not-so-beautiful emissions profile. My estimate? Around 0.5 kg of CO₂e per vehicle per kilometre. Not many people watched that video... but I’m back with an update anyway. There’s a new ferry on the route: the Saint-Malo. It’s hybrid-ready, runs on LNG, and brings efficiency gains. Early estimates suggest emissions could drop by 35–40%, down to around 0.3 kg CO₂e per vehicle per kilometre. That’s thanks to: ✅ LNG replacing diesel ✅ Modern, efficient engines ✅ Hybrid-electric support during port operations ✅ A hull designed for smoother, cleaner sailing It’s not zero-emissions — but it’s a big step forward. And when you multiply that over thousands of vehicles and crossings each year, it adds up. ⚓ Curious how bad Bretagne really was? Watch the original here: 📝 Sources: Brittany Ferries tech specs, lifecycle CO₂e estimates from marine LNG studies, and a fair bit of calculator work. • How bad is taking the car ferry for the en...
