Students and tutors of the BA (Hons) Applied Theatre course at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire explain what Applied Theatre means to them, and why studying it opens up so many employment opportunities. Our focus is on developing the skills and understanding needed to create compelling new performances and theatre projects with purpose. The term Applied Theatre covers all areas of performance including acting, dance, spoken word, plus directing and facilitating drama. The flexibility of the course allows students to express themselves freely whilst working with a diverse range of social groups and communities. The course is predominantly practical; encouraging students to learn through work experience in the wide variety of environments covered by the term Applied Theatre – such as schools, community or health centres, prisons, hospitals, or out on the streets. The film focuses on a community theatre project at Safeside, where our students work in partnership with the West Midlands Fire service, teaching local school children about fire, rail and road safety.
