91 people die in Peshawar blast 10/28/09

PESHAWAR: Peshawar explosion have caused 91 people dead and about 200 injured Wednesday. The provincial information minister, Mian Iftikhar Hussain, confirmed 80 dead and over 200 injured in the explosion. A large number of victims are said to be seriously or critically injured. The victims are mostly women and children. Most of the injured and the dead have been moved by private transportation. It is feared that nearly 70 are dead and more are trapped under the collapsed building. A blast was heard at the police post at Yaadgaar Chowk near China Market in Khyber Bazaar and the ensuing fire has just caused buildings to collapse. Ambulances are moving the injured to nearby hospitals, mainly Lady Reading Hospital, and the fire brigade is working to put out the fire. However, the crowd has brought traffic flow to a near halt. The police and other law enforcement agencies have cordoned off the area and started baton charges to disperse the crowd. Footage shows the police arresting a number of individuals. The government blamed militants seeking to avenge an army offensive against al-Qaida and Taliban close to the Afghan border. No group claimed responsibility for the bombing, but that is not unusual, especially when the victims are Pakistani civilians. Three bombs have exploded in Peshawar this month, including one that killed more than 50 people, part of a barrage of at least 10 major attacks across the country that have killed some 250 people. Most have targeted security forces, but some bombs have gone off in public places, apparently to sow fear and expose the weakness of the government. The Taliban have warned Pakistan that they would stage more attacks if the army does not end a new ground offensive in South Waziristan tribal region, where the military has dispatched some 30-thousand troops to flush out insurgents. It is not known whether today's bomb was remote-controlled or whether this was a suicide attack. This is an old area of Peshawar and the shops here mainly sell cosmetics and ladies' items. Eyewitnesses also report that there is a shop selling cotton wool, which is providing fuel for the steadily-growing fire. The blast set scores of shops on fire, collapsed other buildings, including a mosque, and sent a cloud of gray smoke over the city. Hillary Rodham Clinton was three hours drive away in the capital of Islamabad when the blast took place.
