JVC GY-HM600/650 vs. Canon XH-A1 test and review

We were waiting it since last NAB; the JVC GY-HM600E data sheet talks of wonderful low light performances and no rolling shutter problems. Is it real? This quick test may help you to understand it better. If you need to know more, please read my full review (follows here). Let's begin with ergonomics. The camera is well balanced and lighter than my expectations. All commands and buttons are where I suppose them to be, i.e. in the same position of the JVC shoulder camcorders. The LCD screen is good and placed in an advanced position. It has a good dynamic range that allows to understand the right exposure (the XH-A1 showed a result totally different from the recording). The 23X Fujinon lens is amazing. It features 3 different rings for focus, zoom and IRIS and a very wide angle. The focus never affects focal lenght, but somebody won't like that there isn't a phisical stop for it, and the Zoom, when used in manual mode (there is a switch under the camera) isn't very fast (my feeling is that the ring is not phisically connected to the lens, but it is a "drive by wire" system). The camera features a nice ND filter with 4 options: OFF, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64 (you know, it' a crazy thing but many cameras are dismissing it!) The camera menu allows all the adjustments you may need and is very intuitive. The menu allows you to set the gain level on 3 settings. This is a common feature, what is not common is that you can set gain to -6dB! The camera is so sensitive that you can reduce so much gain to reduce the common video noise. All the tests made in this video were shot with gain set to -6dB! Returning to the starting question; is this camera so good in the low lights? I'd say yes, but only if you need it; I remember that about 15 years ago, with the release of digital shoulder cameras, it was a problem to shoot with a lot of light, the JVC GY-DV5000 first firmware had problems too. The GY-HM600E is another story. If you have in the same shot darks and highlights, the camera showes the details in both areas, probably like no other cameras in this price range. I missed to record the most exciting shot, as well in the video there is no specific test for the rolling shutter, but I made it with good result. The flash banding is not a problem, as well for the skew, no picture deformation making the "tennis" test. The camera records on class 10 SD cards (I used one from Mustang, but please follow JVC suggested stuff) at 35Mbps with 4:2:0 sampling in .mp4 or .mov file formats, or in AVCHD at 25Mbps (I only used 35Mbps .mp4, the same of Sony XDCAM EX like EX1-R). The camera fetures 2 SD slots, and the mirroring is supported, as well as backup and spanning. Is this camera perfect? I think nothing is perfect. I'd have loved the recording at an higher data rate and 4:2:2 sampling because when there are lots of details in the picture, the codec generate artifacts. But if you need higher quality, thanks to the onboard SDI output, you can add to your workflow a portable HD-SDI recorder like BMD Hyperdeck Shuttle, to record uncompressed or 220Mbps 4:2:2 video. The recorder supports the SDI triggering (record will start and stop when you'll press the button on camera) and embedded Timecode RP-188. Any comments or questions are welcome!
