There are a number of video standards we might have used for TesiraLUX. Here are some of the reasons we chose Motion JPEG. In this video, I’ll describe some of the reasons we chose Motion JPEG as the compression algorithm for TesiraLUX. Consumers are used to seeing highly compressed versions of video streams and the distortions that come along with it. For professional grade applications, you need something better – something that doesn’t compromise the visuals. There are a number of video standards we might have used, and many of these are tuned for very special applications, sometimes getting very very highly compressed streams down to mobile devices and that sort of thing. But for us, we needed something that was very transparent and provided the best quality in a known distribution channel. Motion JPEG is a very mature well documented and royalty-free standard, and it supports all the things we need it to support. It has I-Frame only processing so it doesn’t have any temporal artifacts, it’s a low complexity application, fits readily in our programmable FPGA, and it supports a 12-bit data path, and that’s very important for supporting wide color gamut and high dynamic range.
