"Deep Purple" is one of my favorite melodies from the Great American Songbook. Written by pianist Peter DeRose in 1933 as a solo piano composition, "Deep Purple" became so popular in sheet music sales that in 1938 the famed lyricist Mitchell Parish added lyrics. With lyrics, the song became a hit on the radio music charts for singers like Bing Crosby, Bob Eberly, and Helen Forrest. Peter DeRose found success as an American composer of jazz and pop music during the 1930s to 1950s era of Tin Pan Alley. In 1970, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. I love song trivia like this: "Deep Purple" was a favorite song of baseball great Babe Ruth. Babe had the composer Peter DeRose perform this song for him at his at birthday parties bashes for at least a decade. Bonk - its' a home run! Like many great songs from GA Songbook, "Deep Purple" was a hit record all over again in the 1950's (The Dominoes, Screaming Jay Hawkins, Stuff Smith, Pat Boone,) and in the 1960's as sung to a danceable soft rock beat by April Stevens and Nino Tempo, and in the 1970's by Donny and Marie Osmond. This is my arrangement in a 1930's soft swing style. I based this on the teachings and memory of my first guitar teacher Verne Fiedler, as I studied with him for 5 years in the Chicago suburb of Naperville.
