Founded by Rani Rashmoni, a compassionate and courageous widow, the temple was established in 1855 after a divine vision in which Goddess Kali instructed her to build a shrine along the river. The land where the temple now stands was once a lush garden, later acquired by Rani Rashmoni. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhavatarini, a form of Kali, and became a significant spiritual site under the guidance of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa, who served as a priest and achieved spiritual enlightenment there.
