India LPG Shortage: Govt Invokes Essential Commodities Act, Refineries Told To Boost Production

The Government of India has invoked the Essential Commodities Act to address the LPG shortage in the country, directing refineries and petrochemical units to maximise production of liquefied petroleum gas and prioritise domestic cooking fuel supply. The directive, issued on Monday evening, requires refiners to channelise the entire output of C3 and C4 streams, including propane, butane, propylene, and butene towards LPG production. Refineries and petrochemical complexes have been barred from diverting these hydrocarbon streams for petrochemical production or downstream uses. The government has directed oil marketing companies to ensure that LPG sourced under this arrangement is supplied only to domestic households.
