Owen Kennedy's Senior Voice Recital Accompanied by Dale Anderson UW-Eau Claire | Phillips Recital Hall February 23rd, 2026 Program Notes: Tendrement Enlacés, Ma Chère Bien-Aimée (Tenderly Entwined, My Dear Beloved) From 4 poèmes d’après L’Intermezzo d’Heinrich Heine: No.1 (4 poems based on Heinrich Heine’s “Intermezzo”: No. 1) J. Guy Ropartz (1864-1955) Quatre Poemes d’apres l’Intermezzo d’Heinrich Heine was composed by J. Guy Ropartz in 1899. This song cycle was based on German poet Heinrich Heine’s Lyrisches Intermezzo. Performances of this song cycle are rare, as Ropartz is often overlooked by his other French counterparts like Debussy and Satie. Ropartz worked with Pierre-René Hirsch, who translated and published Heine’s poems from German to French in 1890. Ropartz was keen in shaping the poetic phrasing, while Hirsch was more focused on the direct translation. “Tendrement Enlaces” was constructed of three stanzas with four lines each, with the piano and voice in contrasting meters. In this song, a couple lie comfortably in their boat until it drifts towards a magical island where spirits dance to the sounds of forgotten instruments. The music shifts from a tranquil setting to a dark and dreamlike landscape that may mirror the couple's relationship. While their love does not necessarily cease, it rather endlessly drifts, aching in melancholic comfortlessness. I want to thank Kevin Bylsma of Bowling Green University for introducing me to this piece.
