Rhea Silvia was a legendary princess of Alba Longa and the mother of Romulus and Remus, the twin brothers who would later found the city of Rome. According to Roman tradition, she was the daughter of King Numitor, who was overthrown by his brother Amulius. To prevent Numitor’s family from producing heirs, Amulius forced Rhea Silvia to become a Vestal Virgin, sworn to a life of sacred service and forbidden to have children. However, she later gave birth to the twins, claiming that the god Mars was their father. The infants were abandoned by order of Amulius but miraculously survived, and their survival marked the beginning of the story that would lead to the founding of Rome, making Rhea Silvia one of the most important figures in Roman legend.
