Kali Puja, also known as Shyama Puja or Mahanisha Puja, is a major Hindu festival dedicated to the fierce goddess Kali. It is celebrated primarily in West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Tripura, and Bangladesh, coinciding with the new moon night (Amavasya) of the Hindu month of Kartik, which is the same night that the rest of India celebrates Diwali. Significance and Mythology Goddess Kali is revered as the first of the ten incarnations of Goddess Durga and is a symbol of divine strength, transformation, and the destruction of evil. Devotees worship her to seek protection from negative energies, overcome obstacles, and attain spiritual liberation. A popular legend associated with the festival recounts the story of Kali's battle with the demons Shumbh and Nishumbh and their associate Raktabija. After defeating the demons, she lost control and went on a destructive rampage, killing everyone in her path. To stop her, her husband, Lord Shiva, lay down in her path. As soon as the enraged Kali stepped on his chest, she was shocked and bit her tongue in embarrassment, bringing her fury to an end. This iconic image of Kali, with her tongue out and one foot on Shiva's chest, is widely worshipped during the festival.
