The role changing method that we use in all of our training, is based on a very simple principle which is the best way to learn is to work at something from different perspectives. If I'm having a conversation with someone, sometimes I need to practice having this conversation with myself in my role, sometimes I need to be in the role of the person receiving the message or the sparring partner, sometimes I need to be in the role of the coach, and sometimes I need to be in the role of an observer. When I'm in my role, I practice saying things in the way I want to say them. When I'm in the role of the person who listens, I feel what it's like to be spoken to in a certain way and often I find the fact of experiencing that will help me when I'm the one who has to say it, dare to say things I've never dared to say before, because it makes me feel a lot better than I thought, when I'm on the receiving end. When I'm on a coach's role, sometimes the best way of learning something is to learn how to teach it to someone else. And when I'm in an observing role, it's not completely a passive exercise, it's an exercise where we work on listening.
