In the late 90's and early 2000's, Steamrail operated special trains to Bacchus Marsh on several days at the end of the year for local kindergarten children. Due to high fire danger on 28 November 2002, oil burning steam locomotive R711 and Steamrail's Clyde/EMD diesel electric S313 hauled the train to Bacchus Marsh and return. As it turns out, this was one of R711's last runs on the mainline under West Coast Railway's control and in "Super R" configuration. It would also be my final shots of the mighty hudson in WCR service. Not long after this video was taken, R711 returned to Ballarat East for maintenence and did not re-enter mainline service before WCR's demise in 2004. The locomotive was subsequently transferred to Steamrail where a number of the WCR modificaitons were removed before it re-entered heritage service in 2011. This video features the down special at Melton, followed by shunting and turning at Bacchus Marsh prior to climbing the grade out of the station. © 2002 James Brook
