#africanews #ibrahimtraore #namibia Namibia is making waves all thanks to its newly elected first female President, Netumbo Nandi Ndaitwah, popularly known as NNN. Like President Traore of Burkina Faso, President Nandi is gradually proving that she has not come to play but to lead. In just a short while in power, she has made bold and startling decisions that have sent strong messages across Namibia and the world at large. Not only has she slapped visa restrictions on US citizens, but President Nandi has also recently taken direct control of the country’s oil and gas sector. This is to ensure that Namibians enjoy the maximum benefits from the sector. But how exactly is she doing this? Let's find out. In 2022, Namibia grabbed the attention of the world's oil and gas industry. More than fifty years of intermittent oil exploration in offshore Namibia had finally yielded fruit. Shell announced that they had discovered light oil and associated natural gas in the Graff-1X exploration well in the Petroleum Exploration Licence. While Shell and Qatar Energy have a 45 percent interest in the well, the national oil company of Namibia, NAMCOR, has a 10 percent stake. Now, almost immediately, TotalEnergies and Galp Energy also announced that they had discovered oil as well in the respective exploratory well. With all these discoveries, Namibia’s non-existent oil sector has suddenly become existent, currently undergoing rapid transformation. According to NAMCOR, fields in Namibia’s offshore Orange Basin hold 11 billion barrels of light oil and 2.2 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves. If proven commercially viable, the findings could unlock an unprecedented revenue windfall for the Namibian government, more than doubling the country’s GDP by 2040.
