The application of laser-based energy devices is expanding rapidly. Lasers are being used as a tools in medical surgeries in a variety of applications. For example, the pulsed CO2 laser is used for ENT procedures, for general surgeries, as well as in fractional mode for scar treatment, skin resurfacing, and more. In the urological applications Holmium, or green light laser, is usually used for prostate ablation (BPH). Holmium laser is also used for stone fragmentation and lithotripsy. Beside the common properties of lasers such as wavelength, pulse width, beam quality, operation mode, etc, the interaction between the laser and the tissue is crucial to determine the appropriate laser system and operational mode for medical use. Among the important figures are the light absorption in the specific tissue (Hemoglobin, fat, hard/soft tissue etc.), ablation threshold, pulse width, beam shape, repetition rate and also system elements such as waveguide and scanner. In this lecture different medical applications will be reviewed after a short introduction to lasers, interaction between lasers and tissue, and the main laser figures that are used to maximize safety and efficacy of the laser based procedure This Lecture was given by Tzachi Sabati from IZAK Scientific company at November 6, 2016 in the Biomedical engineering faculty in the Technion, Haifa, Israel.
