China to open the Peruvian mega-port of Chancay, a BRI project, amid APEC summit

China is set to open the Chancay mega-port in Peru on November 14, 2024. Local authorities expect this port to transform Peru into the "Singapore of the region." Located 80 kilometers north of Lima, Chancay will enable direct cargo shipments to Asia, reducing export times by up to two weeks compared to routes via North America. Brazil, China's main trade partner, has high hopes for the new port. In 2018, Brazil replaced U.S. soy exports to China amid rising tensions with the Trump Administration. With an initial investment of $1.4 billion, Chancay represents a major infrastructure advancement in South America.
