The Bracken Hill Light Railway or BLR, is a disused railway branch line running from the main Dearne Valley York to Sheffield line, through the village of Ackworth over the 52 steps and progressing up Tom Dando Way until finally terminating at Fitzwilliam Country Park at the site of the old Hemsworth Colliery. Colin The Head presents another epic adventure of Disused Railway Diaries, this episode Colin investigates the former railway line that ran through the village of Ackworth, West Yorkshire. The 3.3 mile branch line, single tracked standard gauge light railway was opened in 1914 and closed in 1962, along the route Colin discovers a hidden bridge dominated by Leeds United fans graffiti, compares pictures from the past supplied by former Ackworth legend Gerald England and discovers the old Brackenhill Station with its single platform used only for occasional holiday excursions.
