Reformed Theology (#2099): Mark Baker’s “Summary of Christian History” Baker discussed the historical development and impact of Arianism, a Christological controversy that emerged in the early Christian Church. Baker discussed how Arius, a presbyter under Bishop Alexander of Alexandria, proposed a doctrine that viewed Jesus Christ as a created being greater than humans but less than God, sparking a debate that led to the Council of Nicaea in 325. The Council, convened by Emperor Constantine, affirmed the Nicene Creed, which declared Christ to be of the same essence as God the Father, effectively resolving the Arian controversy. Despite initial support for Arianism under Emperor Constantius, the movement gradually lost influence as the Nicene position gained favor. The Council of Nicaea also marked the beginning of a closer alliance between Christianity and the Roman Empire, leading to the development of Caesaro-Papacy, where the Emperor effectively became the bishop of bishops, and the establishment of a visible Catholic Church structure. This alliance between church and state under Constantine profoundly influenced the history and development of both religion and state, setting a precedent for future interactions between Christianity and secular power.
