The Standard cast-off (or bind-off) when knitting is a simple, but elegant cast-off method. This technique is easy to learn and is basic knowledge when finishing any knitting project. This bind-off technique is not the most stretchy, but it does give the garment decent room to stretch some. This standard bind-off method can be a great alternative when casting off mid-project for armholes, necklines, or button holes (unless the pattern specifies a different method). It is usually the go-to cast-off for me, unless I crave a more elastic seam/edge or a specific look. How to cast off your knitting project using the Standard Cast-Off / Bind-off technique: 1) knit the first stitch normally (knit stitch) 2) knit the second stitch normally (knit stitch) 3) grab your first stitch and pull it over your second stitch before it goes off the needle 4) leave the second stitch on your needle as you knit a third stitch 5) pull your second stitch over your third stitch, then off the needle, leaving you with your third stitch on the needle Repeat this until you finish casting off. If you cast off an entire project, cut your thread/yarn and pull it through your last stitch, securing all the stitches you just casted off. Make sure you leave enough yarn to fasten it once your project is done.
